Do This To Make Getting Up Early To Exercise Easy

Exercising first thing in the morning is a fantastic way to start the day. It gets the muscles moving, the circulation pumping and it clears the mind. And if you’re someone who wants to reduce body fat, when you exercise first thing, in a fasted state, you’re ahead of the game! But, getting up and out of bed at the crack of dawn can be difficult, right? If you’re finding it a challenge to maintain motivation to form the habit of getting up early to exercise, this article can help so read on.

1. GET ORGANISED THE NIGHT BEFORE

My first tip to make getting up early to exercise easy, is to get organised the night before. Lay out your active wear, equipment and pack your gym bag. Are you working out at home? If so, get your workout zone prepared. Lay out your fitness mat, set up your weights put everything out ready to go. This is a terrific cure if you suffer from excusitis. You know that affliction that goes something like this: “I don’t have enough time to get ready.” Get organised and set yourself up for success. Make sure you’ve got everything ready the night before.

2. GET UP ON THE FIRST ALARM

As the saying goes, when you snooze, you lose. Get into the habit of getting up and out of bed as soon as your alarm goes off – the first time. When you hit snooze, it’s usually all over. Can you relate to that? Are you someone who’s in the habit of snoozing? Break the habit now. A simple way to do this is to place your alarm clock or phone on the other side of your bedroom. This will force you to get up and out of bed to turn it off.  And once you’re up, you’re more likely to stay up.  You can also change the snooze settings on some alarm and sleep apps so you don’t have the option. Are you keen to establish the habit of early morning exercise? Decide what things in your life have to change and make the changes now.

3. RE-MIND YOURSELF WHY YOU STARTED

Your mindset trumps everything. Do you ever get that negative “chicken little” voice convincing you to stay in bed and go back to sleep?  If and when that happens, RE-MIND yourself why you started and why improving your health is important to you. It also helps to give that negative voice a silly sound like the whacky voice of your favourite cartoon character.
The idea here is to break your emotional state. You’ll have a laugh, feel lighter and jump out of bed ready and excited to exercise.
When you’ve ejected “chicken little”,  RE-MIND yourself of the benefits (meaningful to you) of exercise and looking after your health. How will you feel after you exercise? RE-MIND yourself how positive you’ll feel and how productive you’ll be. Ask yourself – “How will my day be if I get up and exercise now?”, “What will I gain?”, What will it give me?” Visit the benefits, often. Your thoughts drive your feelings. Your feelings drive your behaviour. So when you change your mind you change your life.

4. RE-MIND YOURSELF OF THE CONSEQUENCES

Humans are psychologically wired to avoid pain more than gain pleasure. With this in mind, if after re-visiting the benefits(pleasure), you’re still not bounding out of bed with enthusiasm, re-mind yourself of the consequences(pain) of not getting up to exercise. For example, the consequences of not looking after your health might be chronic pain, chronic fatigue, weight gain, low self-esteem and depression. The power in this process rests in being brutally honest with yourself. You know how regular exercise will benefit your health. BUT you’re a lot more likely to take action to avoid the consequences. Ask yourself: “What will this cost me?”, “What has this cost me in the past?”, “What will this cost the people I love?” Give yourself a healthy dose of  what I call “positive pain” to boost motivation, get you out of bed and moving in the right direction.
As world-renowned mindset coach Tony Robbins says, “every decision we make is dependent on our values.” He discusses what drives the decisions we make in more detail in this article.
